As part of my research about how dams affect riverine ecosystems, I canoed Lake Sonoma, a reservoir created by the 1970s Warm Springs dam in Sonoma County. What fascinated me most while paddling were the stands of submerged trees, which were clustered along the lake’s edge and into the narrow ravines that broke off from the lake body. Oaks and redwoods stood ghostly still, submerged mid-trunk in the green-tinted water.

While living on the west coast of Ireland, I toured the Ring of Kerry. What struck me most about this stark and beautiful landscape was how the dark silhouetted hills would disappear and reappear as the clouds wove a path through the landscape.

While doing some research, I got sidetracked by the beautiful ice-scape photography of Frank Hurley (1885-1962), who was the official photographer aboard the ‘Endurance’ as part of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914-1917. Hurley’s images worked their way into this painting, which touches on the fragility of our natural world.

This painting was inspired by a hike in California’s Point Reyes area, where I travelled through a forest that had been cleared by a wildfire. The mist was so thick that you could see it rolling by, obscuring the farthest trees, and billowing over the dark trunks of the closer ones. A desolate, sublime and beautiful scene.
